hi, in my DS 160 form they do not ask if my family is accompanying me. do I need to fill in separate DS 160s for each family member? then the appointment time for each one of us would be on different days right?

Should be separate ds160 for each person. When you get appointment for yourself you will mentioned you will be with someone else.

once I create separate DS160s for family members, how do I book an appointment? I dont see that option in the last window after submitting DS160..

If passport expire date less than 6 months you cant cross border. But you dont need to wait until 2024 september. If you check 3-4 times daily you can catch earlier date.
