ps: You need not apply for H4 from outside the country, you had to only go for either dropbox or interview. Once you are inside the country then you apply for H4 for extension. First time its always different.

My major question is can I travel back to the US on AVR in case they ask me to come back for an in person interview as there are no dates available for in person ?
You have to fill up the questionnaire to know if you are eligible for Dropbox or not. Yes, you should be able to use AVR . There is a hiccup here. You need to be ready with all your documentation while you enter and post it the same day if possible or post it on the next day so that you will have enough time(30days AVR rule) to get your passport back in case of interview request. Better to enter on sunday night or monday morning and post it so that your application will have some enough traction during weekdays.Got it! My wife is currently in the U.S. on an H1B visa, while I am here in Toronto, Canada, on a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and I recently got my B2 US tourist visa last October (I filed it last year September 2022). We've been contemplating our options, and we've decided not to pursue permanent residency (PR) in Canada any longer. Instead, we're looking into applying for an H4 visa in the U.S. to facilitate my move there. As part of our plan, my wife's employer is currently in the process of sponsoring her for a Green Card (GC). During this period, I'm making the most of my time in Canada by working under my PGWP.Is your plan to move back to US ? If yes then fine. If not you would be questioned on why would you need a H4 first of all while already having B1/B2. If not at the embassy, at the border you would be asked if you are going to travel frequently. Please keep this in mind.

Are you planning to move permanently back to USA?? If yes then better apply for H4. If not better to travel on B1/B2. Not necessarily you have to travel to your home country for H4 visa. I am just worried about the interview because my PGWP expires on June 2024 while my wife's H1B expires on May 2024. However, her employer will apply for an H1B extension for her while the GC is still on going. Its always based on your wife’s H1b validity. Its better you apply now for H4 and get inside first and then while her employer applies for H1b extension then also include your H4 petition with that for extension of H4 as well.Thank you for your answer.
