Time line for Permanent Residence application for Refugees

I might be completely wrong, from the people I have encountered here in Canada in the past 5 yrs. Everyone who was granted asylum (protected status), and comes from East, Central, West, or South of Africa is facing issues and hasn't managed to get PR. I know people who come from these areas who have applied since 2018 and have still not got their PRs.

Mind you, people who come from these regions are predominantly black in terms of race. People who come from North Africa are not having any major delays in terms of getting the PR status granted. North Africans are mostly Arabs in terms of their ethnicity and hence not predominantly black.

I can't help but think is due to racism. As I said I might be completely wrong but I don't see any other reason other than this.

I would just advise any East, Central, West, or South of African person in this forum who is a victim of this deliberate delay that is conducted by IRCC to never give up. If you applied for PR in 2018 or 2019 and you are still waiting, JUST GO FOR A WRIT OF MANDAMUS.

I believe it's better we push IRCC to give us a decision, whether positive or negative so that we can be able to continue with our lives without this headache of not knowing if we belong here or not.

At the end of the day, if they don't want us to settle down here, it's ok. It's their country and we will survive as we have always done as people of Africa.

They may take a lot from us but they will never take our Pride

I respectfully disagree. You have not shared any statistics to back up your conclusion but you pulled race card. I dont mean to say there's no systematic racism, but i hate to see people of color pull race card in everything, if they dont go on their way. Can you share your statistics based on your conclusion?

It's ok to disagree. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. What I said is based on my limited observation. I didn't state any facts hence these were purely my opinion/take on the matter. Plus I also did say, I might be completely wrong. Everyone wants to state factual statements and see the numbers, and I agree 100%. That said, I welcome everyone to state the facts and numbers to prove me wrong. I am not saying I am right or wrong. It can be either. But without facts, no one should say for sure that I am right or wrong. You are all welcome to give out your opinion. What I said is not meant to be an attack on any race, so relax guys, you don't have to get triggered.

I know this is a sensitive issue and I’ll try and tread carefully because the delay experience isn’t peculiar to any race, tribe or ethnic group. I am from west Africa and I submitted my application in February 2021 and got my eCOPR in December 2021. (May be I was lucky).

I believe the issue is mostly due to poor prioritization in processing the application from IRCC. Here’s my explanation, there’s has been lots of applications in progress before COVID however those applications were stalled hence the reason for a huge backlog. Also, when the government intervened in Afghanistan and Ukraine issue, most PR application process were stalled and priority was given to the people displaced by war (that has nothing to do with race. I believe it’s more of a humanitarian call) This action however has resulted in another huge backlog thus making the system overwhelmed. I am of the opinion that IRCC needs to evaluate the total number of PR application they have received, prioritize this application, assign them to case workers and also set up a monitoring team to ensure that case workers complete each application within a short time period.

I don't have any statistical data. It was an opinion based on my observation just as it is your belief on the issue. I admit I might be completely wrong but also I might be right. It's okay to agree to disagree.

Plenty of examples of approval. Many who did arrive are actually economic migrants applying for asylum and don’t have strong cases. Many from certain countries would admit they are primarily economic migrants trying to secure status in Canada and better opportunities which was often the case through Roxham road. For example there has been a large volume of applicants from Nigeria who were mostly middle to upper class from southern Nigeria so would typically not have strong asylum cases but many still came to Canada and claimed asylum. If you come from certain countries in Africa like Eritrea or have strong proof that you are part of the LGBTQIA+ population you are processed you can get protected status quite quickly. There aren’t actually a large number of people from North Africa claiming asylum so not sure how you can compare to much larger numbers from other regions in Africa.

Well just because it works for you doesn't mean it's for everyone I applied January 2020 and even as we speak it's still in the process. It's very frustrating.

Thanks you. I applied in January 2020 and it's still in the process I have contacted several MP's and even wrote to Alberta and federal government about this and they sent my email to the immigration. Still nothing, so I decided to apply for Mandamus last month hopefully something will come out of it this time. Again thank you for bringing this up.

Short vacation inside Canada or outside Canada? Because to my own understanding even the RTD is not easy to get anymore.

you can do both if you have the means. RTD takes forever to get but you can always go for your vacation outside Canada once to get your RTD.

Well I just applied for RTD last week hopefully I get it because my PR applciation is now 42 months and still counting.

If your RTD is out, you don’t need to wait till you collect your PR before going on vacation. Just ensure you have your NOD handy.
