Can Canadian host family and friends be used for Express Entry points

Hi, I have previously lived with a Canadian host family for 1 and a half year during my studies in Canada, though I have no blood relationships with them, can this count towards having relatives in Canada if they are willing to write for me a letter in regard to that?
