Hi guys,

My friend who is Canadian Citizen got married in India and after marriage she applied Canada tourist visa for her husband which was approved. They both are in Canada now since couple of weeks after marriage. She wants to file for inland PR and open work permit together for her husband via online application. Can you please advice if she can do it on his own or should use an immigration lawyer to file application ?

It's her choice if she applies on her own or uses an immigration lawyer. Many people do it themselves.

It's pretty simple to apply yourself. Go to the CIC website and download the document checklist for Inland (Family Class for spouses living inside Canada). Create an account on the online portal. Submit all forms and documents. You can NOT apply for OWP along with spousal sponsorship application online. That option is only for paper based applications. For online, you will have to wait until you receive AOR before you can apply for an OWP.

Hope this answers your questions.

Start gathering documents as soon as possible as this takes more time than you think.

You can only file online because paper-based is no longer an option.

3+ months. At the moment it will be over 6 months before the spouse will be able to get a WP. Many were receiving PR before getting a WP. The couple should expect that they will likely be only surviving on one income for the majority of the sponsorship period.

Also for online application is cover letter required? Also please advice for proof of relationship what all should be included - marriage certificate, marriage pics, anything else?

Everything is covered in the guide. Please follow that so that you don't miss any documents. Sometimes there are also country-specific documents required in addition to the basic documents. If your friend isn't comfortable reading through all of these materials themselves, then hiring a lawyer would be the best option.

Yes. Although there is no income threshold you still need to prove that you can support your spouse without government support.
