The Workflow of the Spousal Sponsorship Application Inland

In this Post Thread, I will share what I think is the workflow of the spousal sponsorship application in Inland. I collected more than 10 timelines from random people from 2021 and I compared tham. Please correct me if you find any mistake or you think it is not in the right order.

• First of all, you check if the spouse is eligible to sponosor his/her parter.
• If yes, apply and pay application's fees
• Once the application is approved, the principal applicant will recieve acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) letter or email, Biometric request and Medical Exam request.
• After the biometric and medical exam is done, the IRCC wil be making sure that the principal applicant meets the requirements to be eligible for the spouse partner class.
• If principal applicant is eligible, he/she will receive Pre-arrival Service letter.
• Later on, the IRCC will work on the background check.
• If passed, principal applicant will recieve the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)
• Finally, PR in hand

Did I get it right or I am missing something? You can check my timeline in the signature. I only recieved the AOR email and the biometric and medical exam is marked completed because I have done it before.

What do you mean by saying "...you check if the spouse is eligible to sponsor". What would you check?

AOR simply means that IRCC has received the application at their facility...probably in a massive pile with other application packages. Nothing has even been opened up, so how could they issue an `approval' before sending the AOR?

Next step is assessing the sponsor to see if they qualify to sponsor. Once they are approved and the relationship with the sponsor has been verified/believed, the PR applicant reaches the all important AIP (Approval in Principle) stage. They then complete the medical and IRCC checks background/criminality issues.
From IP 8 (Inland Processing manual):

13 Initial stage of approval
If the applicant meets the eligibility requirements (i.e., criteria inR124, taking into account the provisions of the spousal policy), the CPC - M may approve the application pending the outcome of admissibility checks (i.e., medical, security and background).



What is a pre-arrival Service Letter? The applicant and sponsor must already be in Canada to submit an Inland application (your post is for an Inland application, correct?)

Thank you, Ponga for the clarification. The flowchart on page 44 was helpful. What I learned from your post is that receiving the AOR only means the application reached the IRCC office but they didn't open it yet. I am inland applicant and like many others i did receive pre arrival services however it doesn't apply to us/inland applicants

Mine took around 2 months from pre arrival letter(mid aug) until background check completed (mid Oct) but it can vary. Still waiting for portal invitation
