SUPER VISA QUESTIONS?

Hello

I am curious to know if my mom that comes and visits me in Canada often from USA needs to have a visa in Canada? She is an American citizen and retired. She goes up from Seattle Washington up thru Sumas BC boarder and gets on a flight and comes to Winnipeg to visit myself and her grandson. Legally she is allowed in Canada for 6 months at a time to my knowledge. We had a incident over the May long weekend myself my mom and my son went down to Minneapolis thru the Pembina boarder. Getting into America no problems. But on the way back the Canadian Immigration officer gave us a really hard time. Because my mom comes and visits me once a month that shes in n out of Canada alot. Advised me to get her some kind of status or they can restrict her at the boarder. We have never been given a hard time at the boarder before. She does not stay longer than 6 months at a time. She is not making any income here in Canada she is strictly here to visit my son and myself. Is that correct or was the boarder agent just not having a good day? So I was looking into getting her a super visa.

I am sure you can applied for a super visa for her, I do not believe anything would restrict that. However, I think it's normal for them to give her a hard time once in a while because of her frequency of visit. That said, I'm a Canadian, I live in Canada and I'm a cross border worker crossing almost everyday. Honestly, coming home to Canada sometimes is a hassle, CBSA give me a hard time depending on their mood but I have not had any issue going into the USA, none so far and I have been doing this for years.

So if you want to apply for a super visa (to get peace of mind) it's up to you (and understandable) otherwise as long as you're not breaking any law and doing anything illegal it's just a nuisance you'd have to deal with but only you can decide.

No he wasn’t having a bad day . If it appears your mother is spending more time in Canada then the United States , yes they can enforce how long or if she’s allowed to visit . She’s American so she doesn’t have a “ right “ to visit
She wouldn’t have had a hard time entering the United States, she’s American . She has a right to enter her country , she holds no right to enter Canada.
Six months is the maximum time , doesn’t mean it’s a right . They could give her a month to stay. If it appears she’s abusing it, they’ll give her a shorter period . If she’s been coming up every month , it can be a issue . I’d be looking into the super visa. She’s on the radar now

The frequency of her travel is the issue. How much time is she spending in Canada every month? Does she have a home in the US, have her own assets, other ties to the US?
