PR to Canadian Citizenship

Hi All,

I have heard from my friend that rules and requirements are changing from July 6th, 2022 with some added benefits for all those who are PR in Canada and yet to apply citizenship, is it true? please I was searching for that IRCC updates but couldn't find it please if someone can help me in this regard since I am a PR and qualified to apply for citizenship this friend of mine told to wait until July 6th to see new rules may be I get benefit from that

to be specific - I am kinda not sure - the other word for that is "Changes" - My friend told some changes are happening from July6th,2022 for those who are PR and yet to apply citizenship - this changes could be beneficial ? like easy application, reduced timeframe etc. but not sure
So the right question I can put it out is: Are there any changes going to take place? is it worth of waiting till July 6th

I'm personally not aware of any changes.

Tell your friend to send you the link of where this is announced on the IRCC web site.

Wonder if they’ll expand the online application to everyone else then; it was originally announced to be done late 2021.

Assume they may think that citizenship application may be free after that date. Given our deficit,the likely upcoming likely recession and huge processing backlogs not sure how the government could justify this but you never know with this liberal government. Not always logic involved. This has been a longterm promise but we’ve not seen movement on the issue for years.

I think they may have figured out that if they make it free, there will be a small number of 'oh that's great' stories and coverage, and ten times as many articles complaining that this just makes the backlogs worse, etc.

And probably 100 times as many articles or social media coverage about how it's unfair from all the people who have ever paid in the past, and at least a half dozen lawsuits asking for refunds.

Yes I mentioned current backlogs as one of the reason it would not make sense to announce free citizenship applications especially at the moment. There are many who have been waiting to apply in the hopes they won’t have to pay so there would be a surge of applications at least in the 6 months post investment when existing backlogs are already so long. Given the amount of money Canada has spent throughout Covid, in addition to existing deficits and higher interests rates, realistically the government can’t keep getting rid of fees and will likely have to raise fees. The only announcement that I could think about that could have been related to citizenship applications. There have been rumours in the past that the announcement was coming. Unless OP knows someone in the government with access to insider info I would not count on any announcement.

Oh, I agree - my point was that perhaps, hopefully, maybe, they've realized that the only serious benefit is a quick-hit PR sugar rush, which will quickly dissipate when the complaints begin and leave a net negative for them.

You would hope. They raised the cap for PGP by multiple thousands during a pandemic, while our health system is in serious trouble and as our population ages so I don’t count on logic. Also raised timeframe to remain in Canada on a supervisa to 5 years. Yes there will be less resources used to process potential extensions but if people assumed they were moving not visiting Canada when the supervisa duration of stay was 2 years most will certainly plan as if they are moving to Canada if the length of stay on a supervisa is 5 years. Assume the amount of H&C applications will skyrocket if parents don’t get selected for PGP and they are denied an extension after 5 years. Realistically most will not keep a home to return for 5 years unless they have family to live there. There will be increased amount of use of the HC system by those on supervisas as they get older while in Canada also placing additional strain on the HC system. Unless their has been a large claim assume most will easily be able to requalify for supervisa insurance and there is no need meficals which were required for extensions. Routine care Isn’t covered by supervisa insurance so it is impossible to monitor worsening chronic conditions unless a major medical incident occurs. I’d be curious to see what the level of non-repayment of medical debt is for parents and grandparents visiting Canada not only birth tourism.
