I'm Dreaming of July/2015
My wife is having her oath next month and we already left canada last month. She is planning to do the oath in canada and leave the next day if they can not expedite the certificate process as she is already studying outside Canada. We will put a relative‘s address for the certificate to be delivered

would that work? Anybody done that before?

our relative lives in a Condo in downtown toronto and he has a very small mail box , so im afraid the postal service may not simply bend the certificate and put it in the mailbox and instead deliver it to the closest Canada Post it in the mail box and then ofcourse my wife has To be there herself with her ID to recieve the certificate?

Any advice please? Do they deliver to a person name or to an address? Is a signature required to recieve the certificate?

Thank you

She doesnt need to be there since they send it via ordinary mail through canadapost.
Forget about certificate may be folded during delivery but important is that you should make sure your address on file now to be correct where you can receive the certificate without missing it. For some cases people had their certificate delivered folder - it doesnt matter as its just another certificate into a pile of certificates which you are accumulating from your school age.

I received my certificate at my friend's address and i asked him to mail it to me. Its a paper document, not even a passport hence it can be mailed to any country.
My wife gave the new address when sending the oath form but still they sent the certificate to the address on file and i have seen few post on mixed results(sent to address on file and sent to new address given on oath day). So its important to keep the address on file current before the oath than worrying about folded certificate. If we miss the certificate then folded/non-folded wont matter since we will need to deal with cic for another 2 years to get proof of citizenship.

We actually dont care about the certificate being folded but i’m afraid the postal service might not put it in the mail box and deliver it instead to the closest Canada post office.

Can you please let me know if the certificate envelope had your wife name on it or they only write the address?

Do your friend has one of those small condo mail boxes or he lives in home?

I would really appreciate your feed back

Definitely they wont send it to the post office to pick it up like how you can pickup passports for US consulate visas. There is no instruction for post office to hold this type of mails at post office.
CIC officer told me that they can only send it to residential address.
Of course, applicant's name is there along with address on the envelope.

I assume all residential address have mail box or they will deliver to the door. I am not sure what you are trying to find out on the mail box which i dont know much about it.
My wife's certificate was delivered to address that has separate mail box (even though this rental place is a condo row house).
My certificate was delivered to a condo style mail box even though his(my friend's address) was individual home but the mail boxes were kept in one place for mail delivery for the post office.
But researching on mail boxes dont help. Make sure address is correct which is enough to get the mails(unless this address has issues receiving mails for you or for this address).

Thank you very much for your reply. The reason i’m asking is because we used to sometime get canada post mail delivered to nearest Canada post office when it does not fit the box.

This also happened to me once when I recieved a university degree by mail and it was written on it “ do not bend” , so becuase the condo mail boxes are very small , the postal worker left it at the canada post office and i had to go pick it up myself.

That is why i wanted to check especially if my wife has to leave canada before she receive her certificate she will not be able to come back.

Thanks a million for your help

Hi again Mohan

May I ask what if the ircc asked you if you are going to leave the country before cutting your PR? Did you try to ask to get the certificate faster ? Or you simply did not mention anything and just provided the address And left Canada.

We are worried that if we tell them we already left canada last month and we wont be returning for a minimum of a year that the officer may complicate things for us?!

thanks for your input

They will drop it in the Mailbox, most of the condos will have standard size Mailbox, which do not have the Capacity to hold this size. So they will fold it (it will have a Hard paper inside along with the Citizenship certificate ) so it should be fine. As advised by @harirajmohan , make sure you have the right address on file or updated through the email (while sending the 10th page of the email received for the ceremony). They will fold it in the middle which will come to a size of envelope in width and length by legal size (envelope is little bigger than A4). But I am sure all condo mailboxes will have a good depth.

I didnt inform them.
Reason: officers still use the age old processes to even place the file on hold as if we still have intent clause. They shouldnt be asking us to inform them after we return back to start processing the file. So to avoid them stop processing, i didnt inform them. As i moved to US, i can easily attend test and interview without any issue which is when we need to inform them that we are outside.
But still one should note that officer during oath is still expecting to show the local id. I luckily had unexpired ontario ID hence edmonton officer didnt ask more than that(even though passport can be accepted as secondary id but still insisted on asking to show the local id).
For my wife, we did take chance on showing the expired ontario ID and niagarafalls officer was asking to show the ID second time(not sure if she noticed the expiration or not) but somehow she didnt say anything and could attend oath.

So surely one should have 2-3 years of unexpired local id is needed to tackle during oath if one plans to stay outside.
Surely you can see that people are outside they even tell the officers that they are outside for some or the other reason. But dont know how much their files get delayed.

Thank you mahoon for your reply. Actually for my wife all of her IDs + PR have alooot of time left to be expired as we just left canada a month ago permanantly. so we dont hopfully have any issues coming back to do the oath.

The question I wanted to ask you is actually if we tell the IRCC agent during the oath that we already left Canada a month ago and we just returned for the oath and ask if certificate could be expedited?

Or otherwise not mention Anything and simply do the oath and leave?

I’m afraid we may get an officer who may get annoyed if we tell him we left canada already which is the truth.

Thanks

officer asks if we are inside Canada during the oath while doing the ID verification. They dont care/ask if we came in today or never left Canada.

We can always ask them to send the certificate sooner but they dont send for all sooner. You can try to attach necessary travel proof to request it soon.
But upfront during the ID verification, they tell you to not have any travel plans as certificate delivery takes time. So you will end up saying to the officer that its fine(for their statement "it will take 4-6 weeks for certificate delivery"). So if you leaving after oath then make sure you have someone to check mails daily to get the certificate and mail it to you. It wont be a big deal as long as there is someone for you to send it to your country.

Thanks mahoon , your information has been incredibly helpful! after you mentioned in your first about the importance of checking the address online I tried to check my address and it is still showing my old address!

I changed the address like 40 days ago, before we left Canada and I even changed my driver license to the same address. But after you mentioned how important is to have the mailing address updated I checked and they still did not change it!!!! Although when i did it it said that it usually take 15 days only.

I made another requisition today to change the address . I’m not so sure if this may cause a problem or I could simply update the address when during the oath!

Make sure you see updated address before oath. if you dont have oath yet then wait for 2-3 weeks.
Call them and update the address and it should reflect quickly as online sometimes takes time(i think as per few posts).

At the time of the oath, ask the officer handling your case to confirm the address on file. If it is not, give them at that time the address to which you want the certificate sent. If you wish to be double-sure, include an appropriate note with the documents you mail in after the oath.
