Though immigration to Canada’s northern territories is small by comparison to the immigration flow to Canadian provinces, the number of newcomers decidingto live in the Northwest Territories (NWT), the Yukon, and Nunavut is on the increase. In response to this, there have been new immigrant settlement service agencies setting up in the northern territories to help newcomers with the transition into Canadian society and the Canadian workforce.

The new Agreement on Canada-Yukon Cooperation on Immigration was recently announced by the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Diane Finley, and the Yukon Minister of Education, Patrick Rouble. The new agreement will help strengthen the partnership between the two governments to encourage immigration to the Yukon Territory.

The British Columbia and Yukon Hotel Association (BCYHA) is actively recruiting Filipino workers through Canadian recruitment agencies. Of its 580 member organizations, 79 per cent will be hiring this year. Given that many BCYHA members have spent thousands of dollars this year on unsuccessful attempts at hiring Canadians, the bulk of their new employees will likely be foreign workers.

The full agreement for the Canada Job Fund, which includes the creation of the Canada Job Grant, was announced today, September 8. The grant provides $500 million of federal funds to the provinces on a per capita basis. As such, Yukon will receive $1 million for investments in skills training, plus an additional $500,000 to recognise the distinct labour market needs of the territory.
