My study permit expired so I applied for a new permit for my new school. I am waiting in this processing time.

I learned that I need a social insurance number to work and to get that number, I need a valid study permit. I think I have to wait for it.

Yes - you need a SIN to work and yes, you have to wait.

It is illegal to work under the table and illegal for an employer to pay you less than the minimum wage.

Of course it is illegal to work more hours than students are allowed.
