Hi,

So I know that I am allowed to work 20 hours a week while I am a full time student in an academic session and when there is a scheduled break from school, I can work full-time which is 40 hours a week but on canada.ca, it says that to work full-time in the regularly scheduled break, I have to have a full-time student status in the academic session before and after the regularly scheduled break. But the problem is, I will be taking a term off for Spring 2020 academic session and I was a full time student in Fall 2019 and I will be a full time or part- time student in Summer 2020. So my question is that since I am taking the term after the break off, am I not allowed to work in the break between Fall-Spring terms ? part-time or full-time ?

Thanks

No, there is no academic suspension. The thing is I am in Coquitlam College right now and I will be transferred to UBC in summer hopefully and the reason I am taking the Spring 2020 term off cause there are no useful courses left for me to take in Coquitlam College. So i know that I wont be able to work in the term I take off but my concern is just if I can work in the break ? Cause on canada. ca it looks complicated.

It isn't a scheduled break, so no, you can't work at all.

How about reading week scheduled break for a student currently in his final semester?

I was told my CIC that I can work full time during reading week during academic session as I'll be a full time student before and after the Reading week within the semester.

Reading weeks are fine.

So it is actually a scheduled break since school is closed from end of the final exam week until the beginning of the spring term but since I am taking the spring term off, that break doesn’t count as a scheduled break ? Did I get it right ? And also if that is the case, last day of me working legally is the day of my last final exam or the day when the last final exam in the college Is done ?

Would add that you had mentioned the possibility of studying part-time or full-time in the summer. I assume you meant UBC. You should only attend if it is full-time.

Yes if you are not returning to your studies after Christmas break you need to stop working on the last day of your full-time studies. I would interpret that as the day of your last exam.

I said part-time or full-time cause I don't know which classes will be open in UBC for summer term yet. But why you said that I should only attend studying in summer if its full time only ?

Yes. You should be a full-time student for all semesters except the last one you are permitted to go part-time. Often students may have an extra course or two needed to graduate. You can also take time off during scheduled breaks if you want to. For example universities are often on scheduled break during the summer.

Yeah, I know that but I thought that we have an option to be a part-time student only if it is a summer term and also I heard that we can work full time in summer term under some conditions which I don't know what are those conditions.

The term is not a scheduled break. You are choosing to take it off. You cannot work from the time you finish the previous term until you once again start studying full-time.

Oh I meant the Christmas break between two terms when I was talking about the scheduled break
