Work Visa Validity if I quit my job

Hi,

I have been working in Toronto on a temporary work visa and permit for last 10 months.
My visa is valid till late 2011 but my project with my current employer is about to end.
If I quit my job, will my work visa still be valid? I would like to find another job opportunity within Canada.
I am aware that I need to apply for a new work permit if I get another job.
My basic question is - am I legaly allowed to be in Canada when I quit my job and am still in the process of finding another employer to get a work permit?
Please advise.

Thanks !

A work permit is just visitor's status with permission to work. So if your job ends you can remain until your work permit expires. You already know that you can't work without a new work permit for another employer.

Thanks for your response.
But I am confused because my work visa was initiated by my current employer. And if I leave them, would my visa still be valid?
I mean will my stay in Canada still be legal?
It may take me some time to find another employer to get another work permit. Would I need to get another visa from the new employer?
or can I use my current visa itself?

Please advise.

Thanks in advance !

Look closely at your work permit, whose name is on the top? Its yours right, the work permit doesn't belong to the employer. For a new job the employer would have to obtain an approved Labour Market Opinion from HRSDC that there are no Canadians/PRs available for the work after advertising it on the job bank for 2 weeks. Then you apply for a new work permit. You can't start until you have the permit.

You don't have to apply for a new visa, just the work permit for the new employer should you be able to find one and obtain a LMO.

i am LIC here in edmonton, CPP and EI are also deducted from me. you can apply for EI when you're on leave like, maternity or etc... you can also apply for EI when you're unemployed but applying for a job at the same time (just call canada services to be sure bout it) and if you wann make sure that your employer is realy paying for your taxes, call CRA

oh btw, im just wondering if don't you or your employer file your income tax during the 1st quarter of the year?!

Hi,

You can use the Payroll Deductions Online Calculator to verify for yourselves the amount of CPP & EI deductions.

You will probably get a refund of all the deductions made when you file your tax next year. Look at it as a forced savings for now :) ooppppssss except payment for your board and lodging
