Work permit while waiting for the PR (outland)

Hello everyone,

Hopefully there is someone who can kindly offer the help! Appreciate!
Here is my situation:
1. PR (outland) has been submitted in June, now the status is medical results received - I was asked to provide personal resume couple of days ago, and hence guess the application will be delayed.
2. Currently holding a study permit which will expire on next March 31, I'm in the last semester of a PhD program in Ontario.

I've just got a job offer (full time) which requires me to start in next January. My supervisor at school agreed that I can start it before graduation, considering I only need to spend one day at school to attend the defence. However, I don't have a valid work permit. I've tried to figure out which type of work permit I can apply, but sadly not found a way.
a. spousal work permit - my wife is a PR, so this doesn't help
b. post grad work permit - I haven't got a grad letter from the school
c. PR - not sure if my outland PR application can be approved before Jan :-(
d. off campus - it only allows 20 hours per week.
e. temporary foreigner work permit - I learned it usually takes quite a long time to get the LMIA/LMO

Is there any other way to get a valid work permit before Jan, such that I can start the full time job while waiting the PR and even before the graduation?

I don't see any options apart from those you already listed. The LMIA route will require your employer to advertise for a month first - and then you'll have to factor in another few months of processing. So it's possible you could be done by January but certainly very far from guaranteed. And as you've said, for a PGWP you need to have finished school - and you don't qualify for a work permit by virtue of having applied for spousal sponsorship outland.

If your employer is wiling to go the LMIA route - I would give that a shot and hope for quick processing.

Maybe you'll get lucky and your PR application will be finalized by then.

It's ridiculous that spouse of foreign worker/student can apply for an open work permit but spouse of a PR cannot. Also, I don't understand why is outland PR applicants cannot get an open work permit if his sponsor passed the first stage sponsor evaluation, while the inland applicants can? :'( :'( :'( :'(

The first stage of the outland process is a fairly basic check that just verifies the sponsor meets the requirements to sponsor a spouse (that's why it's completed so quickly). It includes no examination of the applicant or the relationship. The first stage of the inland process, on the other hand, is quite a bit more comprehensive and includes a preliminary review of the applicant and the relationship. So the first stage of outland and inland aren't at all equivalents. That's one reason why an open work permit is only granted with the inland process (there are others).

Spouses of foreign workers are eligible to APPLY for open work permits (note that approval is certainly far from guaranteed as evidenced by the many many refusal posts on this forum). This provides spouses of foreign workers with a potential means of joining their spouses in Canada.

Hi there,
I am currently a NOC level B skilled worker.have completed 9 months and my visa will expire in 3 months.I have also submitted my pr application with my spouse as dependent thru provincial nomination program.I have workpermit support letter from BC province.My question is can my spouse apply for open work permit now from outside canada(India)?or we have to wait till we recieve AOR from CIC
