Im an Indian National working in Canada on a work permit and my wife has an Open work permit attached to mine. Im planning to switch jobs to another employer and if my current employer were to cancel my existing work permit after i talk to them, can i apply for a visitor visa and stay on in canada until my new work permit with the new employer is processed? Should i preemptively apply for a visitor visa in case they cancel my existing work permit or can i wait and apply for a visitor visa after theyve cancelled(in case they do that).

Whats really the best course of action here for me to stay on in Canada in the event of a work permit cancellation until my new one is processed? Any advice is much appreciated.

Your current employer can fire you - however they can't cancel your existing work permit. You can remain in Canada on your existing work permit (without working) until you have your new work permit.

Thanks a lot for that info. Its a relief to know that they cannot cancel the work permit and that i can stay on under the existing work permit until my new work permit is processed.

What about a "closed"work permit to an "open"work permit ?
My case is, my work contract ended, and my WP is only for that employer. I do not have a job offer but it would be a lot easier to get a new job with a open work permit.
Is it possible to get a open work permit with no job offer ?
