Work permit for international student’s spouse

Hi everyone,

My and I just entered to Canada. I study in a postgraduate program, which is two years. My wife has a tourist visa. The border service officer gave her visitor record during my study but work permit. That means she can stay in Canada until my study permit expires but she can’t study or work. She was said to apply for work visa. Have you ever been in to this situation? What should we do First for the process?

Border officer do not know the process. He just said that you may have to call IRCC to ask the process but he was not sure.Does anyone help me?

Hi I am following your thread because I want to k ow the answer too but for your spouse to come, did you ger written authorization from IRCC or because she travelled with you it wasn't needed?

No, we did not get any letter since the rule has been changed by IRCC. If you study, your spouse can travel with you without written authorization

Not sure about the technicalities. But my husband was here on visitor visa and I am here studying. We just applied online for an open work permit for him. It has just been granted after 4 months (COVID). I think the rule said that he could stay in the country as implied status but not work (not sure about this) while it was being processed. However, if it was rejected and he stayed over visitor visa time it would have been marked as overstaying his visa on his records.
