Work permit extension - When can I apply?

Hey everyone,

I was supposed to get 3 years PGWP but as my passport would expire in 2017 therefore, I got PGWP for only 18 months. CIC told me that i can apply for the remaining 18 months work permit once I renew my passport. I'll be able to renew my passport in August 2016. I wanted to ask how sooner can I apply for my remaining PGWP that I am eligible for.

For example, can I apply 1 year before my current PGWP expires?

You should apply as soon you get the new passport.

Applying soon you can deal with possible issues.

Some people is applying for PGWP extension at the border, if you're able to flagpole. Looks like is up to the border officer to issue it, otherwise you should apply online/paper which took 136/97 days currently (I think)
