There is no need to apply multiple months before expiry. Would not leave it to the day before in case you run into issues but as long as you apply before your other WP expires you are fine. Apply online not paper.

Hi, I have a question it would be helpful if you can answer.
when you received a renewed work permit, what was its validity?

Generally, we get 3 years (36 months) of work permit.
But
Due to passport expiry, I received only 30 months, then I applied for renewal on the 29th month (one month) before expiry.
it's already 4months since applied, haven't received any update. in the next 2 months, it will be all 3years done already. so technically I won't get any work permit.

is it how it works?

or if I get approved will it be valid for 6 months?

Refugee claimant, convention refugee/protected person get 2 years. Yours situation is different.
