Hi all,

I'm currently holding a work permit expiring in a month. I'm a contractor(self-employed) right now, and I applied for permanent resident through family class sponsorship last year(I have a family member who's canadian), no decision made yet. I was wondering what type of visa should I apply if I want to stay in canada as a self-employed worker and wait for the decision of my permanent residency application?

Many thanks!

We need more information. Who is the family member who sponsored you? If it's a spouse or common law partner, did you apply inland or outland?

It's my common law partner. I applied inland. Thanks!

Also I'm currently in Canada now. Not sure what type of visa I should apply that allows me to stay in Canada until the result of my permanent resident comes out. Thanks

apply for a new work permit before your current work permit expires, very important, do it now, don't wait

when you apply, you are then under implied status until the work permit is approved, for us it took almost 4 months to come, but we got it and it is now good for another full 2 years, before which hopefully the PR is finished by then

"qualifying foreign nationals who have submitted an application for permanent residence under the spouse or common-law partner in Canada (SCLPC) class.
As of December 22, 2014, open work permits may be issued to eligible applicants under the SCLPC class at an earlier stage in processing. This pilot project will end on December 21, 2016.
Officers will issue open work permits to SCLPC class applicants if they meet the following requirements:
a permanent residence application has been submitted under the SCLPC class;
a Canadian citizen or permanent resident spouse has submitted a sponsorship application on their behalf;
the SCLPC class applicant resides at the same address as the sponsor; and
the SCLPC class applicant has valid temporary resident status (as a visitor, student, or worker)."
