I am currently working as a licensed pharmacist in Alberta since 9 months. My 3 year work permit will expire on 13th August 2015. I have a permanent full time job as a pharmacist with a contract until May 2016 after which I will continue to remain a permanent employee of the company. I have part time work experience as a pharmacy technician (not sure if it meets the criteria for part-time work). I understand that I will be eligible to apply in express entry in May 2015 (one year canadian experience as a pharmacist) but can I count my technician experience and apply before May? And meanwhile to apply for extending my work permit, do I have to ask my employer for LMIA?

You won't be able to apply under CEC until May. You need to have at least one year of full time work - not only in hours but in duration.

So once i become eligible in May, and I apply for PR through EE, there is in no way i will get the PR before my work permit expires.
So in that case my work permit will b soon to expire in August.
So how do I proceed to extend my work permit? On what basis shall i request for an extension?
Do i need LMIA for extending my current work permit that expires in August 2015? My job offer letter states that my contract ends May 2016 after which I will continue to remain full time permanent employee.
Thanks kindly

If you submit a PR application and receive an AOR confirming your application is eligible and that they will process it, you can apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit so long as your current Work Permit is ending within 4 months of the application.

How long does it take to receive an AOR? and when I apply for a Bridging work permit do i need a LMIA? My work permit expires August 13, 2015 and lets say i apply for PR through EE on May 15th 2015. In this scenario, when will i receive AOR and when shall i apply for work permit extension and do i need LMIA for that?

Thanks!!

You don't need an LMIA for a BOWP, you just need an AOR and currently have a work permit ending in the following 4 months from the date you are filing the BOWP application.

No idea how long it will take to get an AOR under EE, PR applications will be filed online which may speed up processing a little and judging by their projected complete processing time of 6 months for most applications, I couldn't see an AOR taking more than a month, that's just a guess though.

Thanks for the info..
So lets say i apply PR under EE on 15th May 2015 and wait for AOR and lets say i get the AOR on 15th July 2015, will I be still good to apply for BOWP on or after 15th July 2015, keeping in mind that my current work permit expires on 13th August 2015?

As long as the BOWP application is submitted after you have received an AOR but before your current permit expires, that's fine.

Bear in mind though that you can't just apply for PR through Express Entry, you need to be selected from the pool first before you can file your PR application. This is the difference from previous years.

Is there any processing time available from the point you apply through EE to the point you get selected from the pool?

No there is no time to getting selected...if you are not selected within one year your profile will be automatically removed from the pool...

So if my profile is not selected before my work permit expires, what option do i have to extend my current work permit? I have the work contract until May 2016 after which i continue to remain a permanent employee. Can i request an extension on my work permit based on my current job offer, presently working since May 2014 with 2 year contract and continuation of employment after the contract date?

Your employer will need to obtain an LMIA in order for you to get another temporary work permit, I'm not sure you'd be able to extend it without?

As far as I know there isn't much else you can do.

Ah that sounds as scary as it is! I work for a corporate firm, not sure if they will go through the pain of getting LMIA for me!
Thanks for all the info..

Yea I'd imaging corporate entities would be less likely to go to the hassle, also remember that an LMIA isn't guaranteed, your employer needs to prove they can't find a Canadian who is able to do that job, it isn't just a case of filling in a form and receiving an LMIA back in the mail.
