Hello,

My girlfriend is a registered Nurse from Ohio, she just was recently granted certification with the College of Nurses of Ontario. She currently has a working holiday visa for the next 12 months.. After the next year if she has an employer, will she be able to apply to have her work permit extended? Can she keep getting work permits since nursing is a profession in the NAFTA agreement?

If anyone could let me know that would be great.

Thanks a lot.

First of all, make sure she has lifted the health care restriction from her current work permit to allow her to work as a nurse.

She will not be able to extend her existing open work permit. Instead, provided she is employed as an RN and has a job offer, she should be able to obtain a closed work permit (tied to a specific employer) without the employer having to go through the LMIA process.

Thanks for getting back to me. She has done her medical exam and it is on her current work permit. So all she needs is a employment offer and she can get a new work permit after 12 months. Awesome, thanks a lot.
