This is the area I feel most shaky about in my entire application.. I have worked for a top 5 US university for 6 years and a top 5 bank, again in the US for an year and a half.. both HRs have flat out declined work experience letters.. I am planning to get my boss at the univ and a colleague at the bank write letters.. does that work? Also have small 2 month stints at a US national lab and a fortune 100 manufacturing company.. haven't reached out to those HRs yet.. So inspite of solid work ex.. i am panicking about the quality of these letters..

What would your recommendation be in cases where HR does not give letters.. do you use the company logo to create a letter and have a former boss or a colleague sign it?

Usually people hesitate to give 'reference/recommendation' letters. Try to ask them for 'experience' letter with only minimal requirements and purpose. I wonder why would a company hesitate to put on paper what's in their records, unless it is confidential or you were working on some super secret projects.

Here is the exact reply...And this is one of the most popular banks in the US.. a "great place to work" award winner etc..

Thank you for your email. You may reach out to the HR Help Center for a letter to confirm the dates of employment, however, once you terminate, we are unable to provide a letter that would contain any comments on work, projects or performance related to "the company". We will not provide a letter stating job duties.

Feel free to reach out to your former manager and see if they would like to provide a personal reference or comment. Typically, leaders do not provide references but you are welcome to connect with him/her if you think they would provide a personal reference.

Looks like getting it from your manager is your only option. Well then get it from him/her and do an affidavit and then mention the reason in your LOE and attach a copy of the mail you got from company about their denial.
