Hi, I graduated from college in Canada and I’m recently working for my sister’s business as a supervisor. I’m wondering if I can apply for Express Entry after I gain enough 1 year experience from there? Thanks guy

Hi, it’s a food restaurant with 4-5 employees including me. I’m a food service supervisor which is NOC B if I remember correctly
Does your sister also work at the restaurant? There is always suspicion when it comes to very small businesses like this that a person is only a supervisor in title only. The fact that you work for a family member may increase the potential concerns that you are only a supervisor in name only. Would make sure you can prove your role and prove why a supervisor is needed if your sister also works at the restaurant as an owner.

That makes sense. So I guess I will need to write a letter to explain. My sister is also working at the restaurant but only for 3 days a week. I will manage the restaurant the other days. I’m wondering how can I prove my role at the restaurant? Should I show them a job offer/contract and paystub to validate my role? Thank you

You can try to describe your role at the restaurant. The fact that your sister is the owner and is also a supervisor may cause doubt about why there is a need for 2 supervisors. Have you looked at all the duties required as a supervisor?

Yes I have. My sister is only working temporarily at this restaurant because next month she is opening a new business and will no longer work here. So basically I’ll be the only manager next month but she’s still the owner.

A lot of the supervisor duties in such a small business are often done by the owner which is why there is often a concern whether there is actually a supervisor in such a small business.
