Hi.
I applied for PR Canada under FSW-2013 in Dec-2013. Luckily after 6 month i: e in May 2015 I got PR immigrant visa. Here I am the principal (main) applicant and my wife, and my 4 years old daughter are dependent on me. So they also got same PR immigration VISA. We have spent one month in Canada and after got our PR card which is valid till Aug 2019, we were moved back to our home country (India) due to our family problem which is my old father and mother are alone and also not medically fit who lives in India. Now we have plan second baby and think that baby would be born in Canada.
I want to know:
1. My wife has not applied for OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) health Card during her last visit. If she moves in Canada in 6 month of pregnancy, and applies for OHIP but during waiting period (min. 3 months) will pregnancy general check-up, delivery cost covers under Health benefit plan.

2. If not, then what is best to get pregnancy general check-up, delivery cost covers.

Thanks
sunny

1. Once your wife returns to Canada, she will have to wait three months before she will be covered by OHIP. During this three months period, she will have to pay for any and all health care she receives on her own - this would include pregnancy check-ups, delivery costs, etc. None of this will be covered during the three month period.
2. Move to Canada many months before the birth of the child. You will still have to pay out of your own pocket for all for all the pregnancy check-ups that happen during the first three months of your stay. However if you arrive more than three months before the birth of your child - then the birth itself will be covered by OHIP.

i heard also that there are some societies/community health center in which some special cases are cover during waiting time (3 months) only for pregnancy, or children who is less then 12.
is this true.

No - not that I have seen.

I've read here of people without OHIP receiving help from community/social centres with their pregnancy. However I don't know the locations, details or any specifics on this, so really wouldn't depend on it unless you had something arranged in advice before you got to Canada.

You can also look at getting a midwife, as their services are free in Ontario even to those without OHIP. If you did a home delivery the delivery itself would be free also, or if in hospital with a midwife it would be considerably cheaper (you can be discharged after delivery in around 4 hours). With a midwife the only situation you would have significant costs is if you required a c-section or were other complications that would require doctors and a longer hospital stay.

However in many Ontario cities midwives are in VERY high demand, and unless you've booked one as soon as you find you're pregnant, you may find they are fully booked when you arrive to Canada and you will need to go on a long waiting list, meaning you may not get one at all.

Why don't your wife move to provinces such as Alberta which one can enjoy free healthcare immediately?

I am planning to land in toronto in august. My wife will be 4 month pregnant. I have checked the eligibility for OHIP card. I understand one requirement where i have to wait for OHIP card for three months but there is another criteria where i have to spend at least 153 days after establishing residency in ontario. so does that means the coverage will start after 153 days or five months although i will have OHIP card after three months. Please clarify.

hI,

My wife has just completed her 1st trimester and planning to move in by Sept end. I had the same doubt and did check with the ON Health dept, the effective date of OHIP would be 3 mnths from landing whereas the claimant has to be in Ontario for for at least 153 days.

The coverage will start after three months. When you fill out the health card application you must agree to the condition that you will stay in Ontario for 153 days.
