Within what period of time MUST landing in Canada be completed?

Hello;

I have searched around this site using various search criteria but can't find the answer to this.

I have sponsored my common-law wife under family class and expect to have her permanent resident visa approved soon. The application is being processed by the Kyiv CIC office.

1. After receiving her permanent resident visa, within what time period MUST my wife complete the landing process in Canada? Can she complete the landing process 1 year later? 2 years later? No time limit?

NOTE: I do understand that if her medical exam is older than 1 year that she must redo her medical exam. So for purposes of this question please assume that she redoes her medical exam.

2. Regarding doing the medical exam again. Has anyone done that and were there any issues with getting the medical exam done a second time?

Thank-you

To my knowledge, your wife has to land in Canada before her medical exam validity expires. If her medical has already expired, she may be required to do another medical exam before landing.

I can't give you a more details as I am not familiar with what is written on the COPR processed outland.

Usually the validity period on COPR corresponds to exactly 1 year from when medical exam was done.

If the medical exam is very close or has already expired, then 3 things could happen:
1. CIC will request a new medical exam be done. If this is the case, the COPR would be valid for 1 year from that new medical

2. CIC will extend the validity of the old medical exam. The COPR would be valid based on how long they extended it for.

3. CIC will issue a COPR with a validity date that has already expired or is in just a couple of days giving you no time to prepare, in which case you will need to contact the visa office to get a new COPR done. This is rare, but it has actually happened before.

The COPR will tell you what date you must land by. The date will be the date of the expiration of the medicals.

It clearly states in the notes with the COPR that the expiry date on it CANNOT be extended under any circumstances.
If you miss it, the whole application has to start all over again from the very beginning.

I got to say it is rather harsh punishment for something that may be out of the applicant's control such as mail delivery, slow CIC response in sending out COPR in a timely manner.

Some people on this site have received COPRs that give merely a couple of days before COPR expires, and others have received COPRs that are already expired by the time the arrive in the mail. I'm not sure what the resolutions were to these problems, but as this was clearly an error by CIC I imagine that they got CIC to extend medicals and re-issue a proper COPR with reasonable validity date.

Agreed. I've also seen a case or two on the forum where the medical was close to expiring and the VO asked the applicant if they would be able to land within that time or needed the medical extended, so CIC is conscious (sometimes) of this.

Thank-you all for the great information and clarifying that for me.

Is there anybody who has had their first medical exam validity period extended OR who has had to do a second medical exam because their first medical exam expired?

Our application was not approved until about 6 months after the expiration of the medical. They extended the medical by a year so we had six months to land. I believe they will extend automatically when the applicant took the medical in Canada and remained in Canada for the period of the application.
