Recently I got my WP ICT visa and visitor visa for my wife & child.
*my wife and child got 2 years visitor visa stamped on their passports. Since it is a visitor visa, can my wife stay in Canada with me only for 6 months? Or can they continuously along with my for 2 years. I am confused.
*If not, to continue stay with me should my wife have sowp? If she switch from visitor to sowp inside Canada, should she go back to India and return again?
*when me and my wife gets work permit, our minor child can stay continuously under visitor visa with us as long as the wp is valid, am I right?

kindly advice.

Wow... Lots of congrats to your family. You have nothing to fear or be afraid of neither do you have to consider whether your Wife and children can stay with you or not. Your Wife will get a Spousal Open Work Permit as soon as you land and you have been given your own Work Permit while your minor child can even go to school if s/he is grown up.

I don't know if you did the application yourself or through an agent but you will discover that your Wife applied for both WP and TRV while for the child it was just TRV but it qualifies him/her for study. So your Wife can stay and work; congrats!

Thanks for your reply. My whole application process is been applied by my employer and their lawyer team. Few days back, we got the visa stamping and for my wife, it says visitor. Thats why I’m confused.

Will the sowp be given at PoE to those coming only from usa or to others as well like coming from India?
You will go to the CBSA kiosk at your port of entry/airport and present your port of entry letter upon which you will be given your permit and your spouse also gets SOWP.

I already got worker visa stamped on my passport . Also I’m travelling first and my wife & kids will join me in 2 months. So we will reach Canada separately. So is this work permit which cbsa gives at the port of entry is only for TRV exempt country?

Applying at the Border
You have the option of applying for your work permit (spousal) at the border or port of entry - and obtaining it the same day - if you are TRV-exempt, meaning either:

  1. You are a citizen of a TRV-exempt country, OR
  2. You are a citizen of a TRV-required country and are re-entering Canada solely from the US
The closest land borders that process work permits are:

  • Lacolle/Champlain
  • St. Armand/Phillipsburg
  • Stanstead
  • Montreal's Trudeau Airport - but only if you are flying into Montreal from an international destination.
If you don't have access to a car, you can take a bus to the US border

Don't forget to bring:

  • Passport
  • Valid work permit
  • Immigration Canada application fee: $155 + new $100 fee (as of Feb. 21, 2015) = $255
  • All of your supporting documents: proof of medical exam (if applicable), Marriage License/Certificate (translated in either English or in French) or proof of common-law partnership.

Yeah, you have a Temporary Resident visa stamped on your passport but do not have a Work Permit yet, it is at the port of entry you will be given your Work Permit, the same applies to your Wife when she arrives.
