They can stay six months, and assuming you are married most likely get an extension.
Because a lot of people can't. The visa offices that take the longest to process an outland application are Accra and Nairobi. Well, nobody from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, etc. is going to get a TRV when he/she has a spouse in Canada. Believe me, we have tried.
The waiting game is also bad for those of us who have applied at a visa post that takes a long time. My husband's application started in January, 2008. He had an interview, and was rejected, in May, 2009. We are still waiting for an appeal date. All this time apart - it's not good for the marriage, and it is very stressful. I wish he could apply inland.

This is what I am doing, my disappointment like others is not only can I not work. But it is illegal!
The way it is going I could be here for well over year before I can legally work. However as a US citizen I'm hoping to get a job through NAFTA. (fingers crossed)
I'm not sure what you are going on about... You applied in-land, right? The current processing time for first stage approval is 6 months. If you submitted an application for an open work permit with your PR application, you could be working in 6 months, no? AND you can apply for provincial healthcare once you get the first stage approval. Plus being from a visa-exempt country gives you the luxury of staying with your spouse while everything is processing. I can't see how it is so much worse for you than people who are applying outland, particularly those who are denied visitor visas.

In any case, try not to stress too much. Lots of people are in the same boat as you. I would hope that you and your wife love each other enough not to separate because you are not able to work (what if down the road one of you becomes ill/injured and can't work? Would you separate over that?). I'm supporting my husband financially while he awaits his PR status and it doesn't bother me in the least. I think it bothers him more than it bothers me. Maybe the same is true in your case.

I agree with Gretta....I applied Inland....got first stage approval and OWP in 6 months....my case has been processed and finalized...just waiting my 'landing' date in Vancouver (that can take 3 months)

But I can work and am now covered on health care so the 3 months does not worry me. Total time from application to landing will be about 10 months....waiting the PR card is the same for everyone Inland or Outland approx 60 days at the moment.

Nothing prevents someone who is visiting Canada from applying through the outland route, even though they are physically inside Canada. You are never obliged to apply inland.

Lots of people assume that, since they are in Canada, they should apply through the inland route - that is often not the best thing to do.

There are some circumstances where inland is the best option - e.g. an out of status person who wants to stay in Canada with their spouse above all, and doesn't need to leave Canada for any reason, or a foreign national who would usually require a visa to visit Canada (and so does not want to run the risk of being called for an interview in their home country and then not being able to return to Canada before the application i finished).

However, I think it's fair to say that most people who file inland would have actually been better off applying through the outland route, and maintaining their status in Canada (visitor / worker / student) separately. The CIC website doesn't make it clear, though, and the structure even leads you to assume that if you're in Canada, you need to apply through the inland route. Lots of people fall foul of that mistake and as a result wait months or even years longer than necessary to get their PR status.

I made exactly that error, and my PR probably took the best part of a year longer than necessary.

I would like to apologize to those applicant that are applying for PR from countries that require a visitor visa. Those of us that do not need visitor visa, sometimes assume anyone can visit Canada by simply booking a flight.

As someone from a visa exempt country I can pretty well visit anytime. And being from the States it's 3 -5 hour flight / 10-12 hour drive.

I didn't realize this when I posted in this topic. But my understanding is that those that are applying for PR where they require a visitor visa, have limited visiting options.

Again those from countries that require visitor visa, and away from their spouses for long periods of time, you have my sympathy.

I Understand your feelings I could not inmagine not being with my husband every day, but you must agree it would be a lot smarter if Canada imm would not let these people sit here, not be able to work and even worse we cant even go on a Holiday, see' if Canada imm would treat an inland appl the same as an outland, all people being sponsered would know if they can even stay here, and then they could be working and feel useful. I'm sure all inlanders agree this waiting feels like a game and it sucks...
Seriously, I dont think treating the same applies here at all, because before anyone applied, there were advantage of each stage and i`m sure everyone had to make their own bed, when you decide to apply inland, its not like the others couldnt do that, they would have but they had to make a rational decision first by thinking financially, emotional and how much time they will have to invest to this waiting game until the PR will be out so i`m not saying that the ones who have made the inland application were irrational at all, but they knew what they are doing and have everything all covered, they`re stable and can start their family even waiting for the PR so for us who applied outland, we also had to look pass through all of this hardship for being apart from our spouses but we knew it could be few months and we`ll join them and then start our lives under the same roof and look for jobs etc.

Its heartbreaking for all of us to go through this but to be fair, we made our own decision and we knew very well what will be the outcome so the differences in here is the choices we made on this journey we decided to take. We know the Canadian Immigration officer wont really care much about things like i`m not working.......you can sponsor your spouse then that`s not a an issue at all and that's why they granted you that first stage to be a sponsor. Anyway, to make this short, its to say good luck to all of us and of course, it`s not easy but we all want the same thing in the end, to be with our spouses, get the PR and enjoy our married life with our spouses and start a family(for those who dont have kids yet) :)
