But how do you do date night from three thousand miles away? :(
One thing my husband and I do, we get dressed for a date, turn on the webcams, then prepare the same meal at the same time from the same recipe. Then pour ourselves a drink, and eat the meal together on camera, in otherwords, we have dinner together. Afterward, we watch the same movie either through Netflix or the same DVD (this can be interesting to get them sync'd up). We don't do it all the time, but when we do do it it makes it feel very special, so it maintains the date-like quality.

Sometimes you have to get creative, but dates are perfectly possible. :)

^I feel like you guys do not have a 9 hour time difference :p

But yeah, I agree that the distance makes it tough and talking is the most important thing. Also, never underestimate the power of a bit of a spicy skype session! hahaha.

Haha...well, he said from 3000 miles away, so I think dinner together would be possible. :) And Yes, I can see having 9 or 12 hours being a problem for having dinner together, but you can still dress up, and watch a movie, granted one of you will probably lose sleep.

And yes...thank heaven for Skype.

We have a 12 hour difference that's why I had to quit my job and turn my life upside down. I quit my job to give him peace of mind. But I told him when I get there there is no way I'm not working he is the only one who was able to convince me to quit my job. I guess it's worth it looking back on all the fights we used to have before. We still do fight but not as intense as before that we fight almost everyday. But it sometimes gets to me that I don't do anything to keep my mind of the waiting it makes me more depressed and temperamental. But he said he can deal with my b*tch*ng as long as I don't work ::) My laptop's on 24/7 thank God for skype and magic jack. ;D

At a distance it sure isn't easy. But I think there was some great suggestions. Dress up how your partner likes to see you. Have that dinner/breakfast via the computer. My partner and I are together but even together we we really work at it. We are have both had crap relationships so we know how lucky we are.

Start talking and don't stop. Communication is the key.
Pretty much this. Constant communication is the key to getting along and resolving conflicts in a marriage. That's why VO's will look for evidence of communication (emails, sms, phone, letters, etc) in assessing whether a marriage is genuine, right? Of course, communication has to be meaningful and effective as well. It doesn't mean just talking at each other.

When my wife and I were getting to know each other, we knew that we had to spend a lot of time and effort on communication to get over the cultural differences between us. And beyond just general cultural differences, there are personal differences too. We had to learn to communicate in both ways: listening to each other honestly, being open to each other's ideas, feelings, needs, and so on; and telling each other honestly about our own ideas, feelings and needs. In both ways, we had to learn to restrain ourselves, keeping a respectful attitude, using non-jugdemental language, abstaining from fault-finding and destructive criticism, giving each other room to speak our minds fully. "Strive not to offend nor to take offense" is one aphorism we try to live by, in particular. We know that, since both of us come from different cultures, we might both do things sometimes that hurt the other, but we know that in our hearts, we love each other and we won't let those little annoyances—which, in the grand scheme of things, are so minor!—keep us apart.

I think that people who've married someone of a different culture are luckier than most, really, because they're more aware of the fact that there are differences to be overcome (i.e. the differences are more pronounced and obvious), and that they have to work harder in order to overcome those differences.

Oh man. I want to have a headset burning party as well. If I never have to wear one again once I am with him it will be too soon. And we've never tried falling asleep, mostly because the headset is so gosh darn uncomfy. Stupid headset.

Cute :)! I melted a little when I read this. :D

My husband and I didn't use a headset often, we used our webcam microphone and edited the settings so there would be no, or very little, static. When I was going through a bad period of time (lost my job) I sometimes took my laptop to bed with me, with webcam on. My husband sometimes did the same when taking a nap.
On average, our Skype calls and webcams were always on when we were both home and awake.

My husband and I did something similar! Every week we'd pick a recipe and cook it each on our side of the webcam. Our time difference was 6 hours, so I had to cook late and he had to cook early. We used to try and outdo each other with details, making it look really good. We also sometimes drank wine "together".
We'd also watch episodes of a series each on our side of the webcam.

And we used to hang out in Second Life, we even had a house together in that game! And we got "married" in it!
I am so glad that nowadays, when we want to spend time together, we can just turn off the computer and go for a walk, or for dinner, or go see a movie. But the creative ways in which we made the most of our situation, those are great memories we will cherish forever!

Oh, I read your posts. Some of them are very romantic. I remembered my first few years of marriage, I don`t have any special recipe for success , we fight, we get angry with each other, the best part of fights is making out , otherwise it would be boring. And I know for sure we couldn`t live without each other. We have very passionate marriage for 18 y. now. And i wouldn`t like it any other way.
