Why FCH category for PR

Hi,

I got my PR a few years back :) but i am figuring out the categories just now.

Back then, when i applied, i opted to apply through Family Class cateogry sponspored by my spouse, instead of High Skilled Worker
category that i was eligible for. It was for no specific reason, really... just a choice...

I got my PR about 6 years back without any delays, questions or anything.
But only this morning, for the first time i realised that the category matters! I was issued a FCH category.... we do not know why.
Now, i hold an Indian Passport...and i learnt from the Indian High Commission that if i have a Canadian PR under the FCH category or
the Refugee category, then my Indian passport cannot be renewed. Hmn...n i am clueless why i was issued a FCH category.

My questions to you folks out there:

Is there a way i can apply for change of immigrant category after all this time? like to FC1 (Spouse)?
What are my options to get out of this tricky situation.
Apparently, India wont even issue my kids Person of Indian Origin (PIO) status
or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Status because of this category in my PR.

Does anyone know if applying for Canadian citizenship with this category in my PR card makes any kind of difference to the application
process..?? Even if i were to send out the application for citizenship today, in all probability it wont be approved before my Indian
passport expires!

Any thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

I don't think there is a way of changing the category under which you became a PR. How could there be? That would mean that someone would process your file again, under the same conditions as when you initially applied, and take a different decision.... That's absurd ???

I don't know of any differences as far as the citizenship process between different categories. In Canada, you are a Permanent Resident like all the other Permanent Residents.

FCH means that a person submitted a family class application and requested processing based on Humanitarian and Compassionate considerations.

Did you ask for any H&C considerations in your application? If you didn't, then you probably should have been classed as FC1 and not FCH.

I would suggest you contact CIC and ask for clarification. If this was a mistake on their part, they should be able to correct it. If you can't get anywhere with CIC (the call centre sucks), you could request assistance from your MP.

The FCH classification wouldn't affect a Canadian citizenship app.
