A thread for all the married couples out there... who proposed to who? And how? Was it a premeditated thing, planned months in advance? Or was it completely out of the blue? When and where did the proposal take place? Was there a ring involved? Was it a public proposal, or private?
For us, we knew for a while that we would end up getting married, although we didn't know exactly when the decision would be made. I ended up proposing to my wife in a park in Hanoi, Vietnam, in the afternoon of June 2nd, 2009, during my first visit there. We had gone out for coffee and had been having a frank talk about the future of our relationship. We shared our feelings honestly, and I explained how I was afraid that I might not be ready for marriage yet--that is, that I might not have resolved enough of my own faults or be ready to accept hers. She challenged me by saying that we didn't need to wait until we had reached a state of perfection and overcome all of our personal challenges, only that we were willing to grow together and work on them together as a couple. What she said touched me, and, as we sat down to rest in the park, I summoned up my courage and asked her if she would marry me despite all my faults, and she said yes. We were surrounded by people, but I'm not sure how many of them realized what was going on There was no ring involved at that time, since I hadn't expected to propose that day--although as I said, we had thought about it and talked about it for a while.
