Who has done spousal sponsorship before?

I just wanted to introduce myself on here and of course I have a couple of questions lol I hope some of you nice people would be able to help me.

Okay, first off I’ll start with a little background. I met my fiancé in early 2009 online, we started dating in October 2009. We met for the first time in person in June 2010. When I arrived he proposed to me and I said yes. While staying with him for two months we decided to get me to stay with him because we couldn’t handle the thought of leaving each other. So we did some research and since I am South African, we looked for info on this South African forum for people migrating to Canada and unfortunately there were some really negative people telling me that there was no way I could stay and telling us that spousal wouldn’t work for us. We were under pressure since time was running out. So we decided for me to come back here so I can finish my studies. The day I was supposed to leave Canada, we immediately decided for me to come back as soon possible. So now I am ready to go back even though I have another year to complete at university I just cannot stand not being with him anymore.

So now I am planning on coming to Canada (Manitoba) next month and we plan on getting married in June/July and then applying for spousal. I am applying for a multiple entry visa this week. When is the best time to apply for spousal sponsorship after we get married? Has anyone gotten married in Canada or more specifically Manitoba? I just wanted to know how long to wait to get married after I arrive and how long to wait to apply after we get married?

I most definitely want to send an application for an Open Work Permit along with my PR application. Do I just send it along with that in the same package? Also how much extra will that be? Also I will sign up for the ECAS tracker (how much is that by the way?)

Concerning sending them proof, Up until now we have a crapload of Facebook messages we sent each other, chat logs, pictures we took together, we have letters we wrote by hand, we have my flight tickets showing that I went to visit him and actually returned here, bus tickets, I have texts on my phone still, he has his phone bills. We skype and video call each other every day so I don’t know how we’ll be able to prove that. Is there anything else I will need to provide? Letters from friends and family perhaps?

Okay, so when applying for the application, I am going to get my local police clearance certificate this week. When should I go get my police clearance in Canada? I have also read some posts about a FBI clearance which I am confused about (please clarify this for me) . I also know they will want to know what I’ve been up to for the last 10 years. I’m 21 right now and I’ve been in school since 10 years back when I was 11 lol then 6 years later I completed high school. Ater that, I have been studying at a university up until now. I have also worked part-time here and there and have been living with my parents since 10 years back (the same address).

Also how long does getting medicals take? When is the best time to do it if we get married in June and want to apply in I don’t know, maybe July?

INTERVIEWS! If this happens where are they held? And what on earth do they ask? It sounds so scary.


Is there ANYTHING I am missing?

It saddens a person thinking of the long wait because it’s a dreadful thought thinking about how my fiancé-soon to be husband will have to work alone and everything. I really wish there was a way I could help. However, the wait is definitely worth it.

------Are you applying inland or outland? You can apply outland and your visa office would be Pretoria which is taking 18 mths based on CIC's website. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm/fc-spouses.asp. Inland first stage of approval takes 9-10 mths and another 9 mths (sometimes more sometimes less) for finalization. You can apply as soon as you have your marriage cert and if you think you have all your evidence at that time. You will need to send the medical and police cert together with the application. Unless you have lived in the US for more than 6 mths then you don't need an FBI check from them. You need police reports for all countries you have lived in for more than 6 mths since turning 18. I am not too sure how long it takes to get the marriage cert in Manitoba. For me, it took just over 2 mths in Ontario.

-----You only send an OWP application if you are applying inland. So yes if that's the route you're taking then send it with the application. You can check e-cas manually on CIC website. The e-cas tracker is also free but it's your choice to sign up if you want.

-----Sounds like you have lots of evidence but add anything else you think may show good proof of relationship.

----You just need to enter it like you just did here. Account for all your time. Like I said earlier... unless you lived in the US, you don't need FBI check. You don't need a police check for Canada unless they request it during the process.

----They usually prefer the medicals to be less than 3 mths old by the time you send the app so don't do them too far in advance. Same for the police check. I stayed in Canada and my brother did my police check back home for me. I just had to send the fingerprints.

Answer: There is not a specific set time on how long you should wait to get married. I know some provinces have a wait period after you apply for the marriage license (example I believe Newfoundland's is 3 days) so that is the only wait time you have to get married. If the marriage license says you can get married the next day then you can. Other than that it is up to the both of you when you feel it is the right time to marry. And there is no specific time that you have to wait to send the app after marrying. As long as the application is finished, you can mail it off as soon as you like after getting married.

Answer: You can only send for an Open Work Permit with the PR application if you are applying inland. If you need a visa to get to Canada then I doubt you would be able to get here seeing as they would know that since you have a fiance from Canada that your intentions would more than likely be to stay permanently instead of just temporary. If they don't agree with that, they will refuse the visa. Now if you do get to Canada you will want to apply for an OWP BEFORE your status expires and make sure the application is received by Vegreville before it expires. Yes, you will send the OWP with the PR application. The OWP costs $150 CAD and you will want to pay for that on a receipt of its own. Make sure you also include the checklist, receipt, and additional documents necessary for the OWP application together and then attach those forms to the PR application. The ECAS tracker is FREE.

Answer: All the evidence you have sounds very good. Just remember that everyone has different evidence so don't think yours is bad if you don't have the same. Just try to get them to see your love for what it is. Letters from friends and family is actually very good. Keep saving evidence all up until you send it off. Also here is a thread that lists what I sent. Now remember everyones evidence is different but hopefully this helps give you some idea.

Answer: Police clearances are only good for 6 months from the time you receive them and you need to send them with the application with them being no older than 3 months so you need to send those pretty close to the time you submit the application. The FBI clearance you will only need if you resided in the United States for 6 months or more. The FBI clearance can take anywhere from 4-13 weeks to get. They want police clearances from any country you resided in for 6 months or more since the age of 18 I believe. You will fill out the address, work, and educational history on the forms. They want to know what you have done in the previous 10 years. Shouldn't be too difficult to fill that out. I too am 21 and didn't have much to put down so you won't have a difficult time with that. Medicals you just set up an appointment with your local DMP (aka a doctor certified by CIC to give immigration medicals) and you can find your nearest one by looking on the CIC site. Call ahead and ask for prices. I would wait to get the medical around June. The medical is valid for 12 months but you want to get that done as close to the time you are going to send off the application as possible to avoid it expiring and having to retake the medical.

If you apply outland then an interview (if necessary) will be at the local visa office in the country you applied to and you would have to fly to go there if you were in Canada at the time. If you apply inland then they would after about 9-10 months transfer the file if they have questions to the nearest CIC office in your area in Canada. And the questions can vary on what they need to ask you. But it is mostly questions on how and when you met, where was your wedding, etc. Basic questions any genuine couple would know how to answer about each other. If there is anything else you should know, I would look at the thread below. It may help a bit. Other than that, just ask questions as they come to you and we will try to help.
