I crossed the land border at thousand islands bridge with a dog ( and some cans of dog food ). No one asked for a rabies vaccine or any other vaccination proof.

I am. I have my rabies vaccination papers and I plan to get letters of good health from my vet 30 days before travel. I am nervous about crossing the border by land. You can't ship animals as cargo in between May - October and I don't trust the airlines with them as "Checked Luggage". I have a 36 hour drive. My dogs are typically mild mannered but I look for them to go nuts when border patrol comes up to the car.

Where did you drive from? Our drive was about 36 hours as well, and our dogs behave the same way when people are close to the car. We had our vaccination docs with us, but they literally walked right past the car to look into the attached trailer. Our dogs were in the car barking like crazy, but they just ignored them, and no-one asked to see their docs.
