Hi all,

I am a indian diplomatic passport holder and have received a paid internship award for 12 weeks starting 1 May 2014. I am confused as to which visa I should be applying as the CIC website always mentions to apply for Student + Work visa but the award letter mentions that as the duration is less than 6 months, a student visa is not applicable.

Thanks.

Study permits are for people who are attending school in Canada.

For an internship, you need to apply for a work permit. Before you can apply for a work permit your employer will first have to obtain an approved Labour Market Opinion:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/employers/lmo-basics.asp

If your employer hasn't obtain an approved LMO yet, then you should be aware that this process will likely take around three months. The work permit will then take additional processing time.

Thanks a lot for the reply scylla,

The University has indicated that as per the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act Regulation R205 (a) – exemption code C10 - allows for the issuance of work permits, exempt from the Labour Market Opinion (LMO) requirement, to exceptional senior undergraduate and graduate students selected for research internships.

hope that clears any doubts.

You should have indicated it was a research internship (vs. a business internship). That does change things.

The answer to your question is in the information you quoted.

You need to apply for a work permit - not a study permit.

Hello,

I am also an Indian citizen. I have received a paid research internship from University De Montreal for 8 months. I have completed my undergrad in July, 2015. So I wanted to confirm whether C10 exemption code applies to me or not ? If not, does my employer has to file for LMO then ?

Thanks,
