Hello Everyone,

We are currently looking into getting the Canadian police check for our application and wanted to know which type of police check we need to get. I know there are several different kinds but I don't believe I saw which one to get anywhere in the checklist or forms or anything.

Thank you

it depends on you. If you're not Canadian you could get your home country's Police Certificate... and if you decide to get a Canadian one they will ask you if its for immigration purposes or not.

My common law partner is from South Korea and she has been living in Canada for the past few years under both a study permit and then a work permit, so I believe that she needs to provide both. But you're saying that at the police station she should be able to tell them she needs one for immigration purposes and that should be enough for them to understand?

I've been there a few times and those old women are miserable as hell and I don't want to go in there without knowing what I want or else they will give me a hard time or wont help me at all.

Do you need a police check from your home country for PR application? Because if I wait for them to request it, it takes a while to recieve it

I called IRCC call centre to confirm if my partner needed to submit fingerprints for the police clearance record (we are applying outland and partner is from Chile). They said yes, if it is requested. My partner is going to a remote worksite for 2 months later in May, so we are trying to get the fingerprints done now, without the request before he goes away for his work (we received SA in March and have been waiting for 7 weeks for the VO to send us a request for information, probably the PCC request). I am not sure about inland applicants, but I would think if your partner has been in Canada for a few years, they will likely ask for one from Canada. If she is here and needs a fingerprint search, she can just go to the RCMP detachment to submit her fingerprints (they have a digital scanner there). I don't think you need to show them a request, however, if you don't have the letter from the immigration office, I believe they charge you an extra $25 (don't quote me on the exact amount). I think anyone can request a report as long as you pay for it.
Good luck to you guys!

IRCC website recommends that you request a PCC as soon as possible due to the time it takes to receive it. So, they recommend you submit the application first without the PCC and submit when you receive it from your home country.

However, some countries will require a request letter from IRCC before they produce a PCC. You would be best checking with your home country's requirements for producing such certificates.

Yes, it's true that some countries require the letter before they get their PCC (Some of the Mexican applicants on the Mexico thread had to do this). However, I think for a Canadian PCC, one doesn't need a letter. My partner is getting his fingerprints done through a specific police station that will take the form written in English (otherwise it would have had to be translated to Spanish as his home country deals only in this language, the official one). He was advised to go there by the Canadian Embassy and I guess he doesn't need a request because he is doing it beforehand as he will be unable to do this process when he's away for his work. The PCC from his home country was submitted upfront as per the country specific instructions. I just don't understand why they do this for some countries and for others they request it later??!!

You only need a Canadian check if it's specifically requested. IRCC do their own RCMP checks, and will ask for fingerprints if they cannot distinguish you from a known Canadian criminal.

I honestly dont think that is true. In the guide for PCC it specifically says that you need to hand in a PCC for every country you lived in for more than 6 months. If you studied in Canada for several years, that qualifies as living in Canada for more than 6 months. Even me who only studied a combined 5 months but lived in Canada as a visitor for several more months had to hand in the Canadian PCC.

Only if it's specifically requested. IRCC are very clear on this. If you were requested fingerprints to complete the check, it's because they were, unusually, unable to clear you without that. Most people do not need that.

I thought I'd read somewhere that you don't need a police check from your home country unless they request it and my country specific requirements (uk) said there was nothing rèquired
