Hello there!

In 2010, I started the application process to become a Permanent Resident of Canada and now my sister would like to join me by going to school here. The thing is, I know very little about how to get a student visa and what is necessary or not.

The big questions right now are: 1) How do I know how much funds she will need and how should she go about getting loans? Can she go through Canadian banks or US banks? I know her college expenses will be around 5k/6k per semester, and that she will be living with me for practically nothing/free. 2) When it comes to insurance, how does that work and how much does it cost?

She is looking at going into the Language Arts program at Dawson College in Quebec.

- She needs to be accepted into a program in Canada first before she can apply for a study permit.

- If she needs loans to fund her studies, she will have to obtain them from her home country.

- To be approved for a study permit, she will need to show that she has sufficient funds to cover first year tuition + $10K for living expenses + $2K-$3K for travel expenses. It doesn't matter that she will be living with you. She still needs to show these funds.
