I applied 1st of January 2014. I think application reached by 4th or 5th of January 2014.

It is still step 1 so lets see how long step 1 approval takes. After that step 2 is a long journey.

My application transferred to Ottawa Feb 29th, 2016.

Ecas updated Sponsorship status to in process on Mar 18, 2016

Which section are you referring to? there are two boxes one is Sponsor related approval and second is actual PR application status.

It's Sponsorship Application Status. Let me edit my previous post. Not approved. It's transferring to Ottawa office. Sorry for the confusing.

App received on Jan 9th 2014

Sponsorship Application Status: In process
We started processing your application on March 16, 2016.

No email or post yet.

But I have a colleague who's application was received on the 2nd Jan, is still in App received status. Is there a quota for each country for a year? could that be a reason for non linear pattern?

We know that is a new process and nothing is exactly certain yet, but does anyone know if is possible to get the residency within 1 year? My parents are here as a tourist and I'm not sure if I should apply for Super Visa, extend the visitor visa or wait the Parent sponsorship process...any ideas??

Unfortunately it will not be possible to get residency in 1 year. This is a two stage process, with the next stage taking the longest based on where it is sent anything from 3-6 years? You should apply for the Super Visa while you wait for PGP to be approved.
