I moved to Ontario at the beginning of May this year. I found a place to live and have a rental/lease agreement (starting 1st May) that has my spouse's name as well. I applied for OHIP card and got it after the three month waiting period. i.e. valid from August 1.

If my spouse now joins me in Ontario, when would her waiting period start? Will it be from the time she lands in Ontario? Are flight tickets valid for showing when she landed? Will I need to get any additional proof of residence for my spouse?

It will be the date she lands in Ontario. Proofs accepted for residency, PR and identity are all listed here:

Thanks for your reply. I'm aware of the proofs required for the process.

Hypothetically, what are the risks of simply showing them the rental agreement as proof of residence for my wife (and getting the coverage started immediately)? They did not ask me any other proof of entry into Ontario, like a flight ticket or anything.

Errrr…. try fraud / misrepresentation! The risk is that in the event of any claim, if it comes to light that the start date was fraudulently stated, you could be obliged to pay for all medical costs.

Strongly suggest you abide by the rules, which clearly state the person in question must have landed as settler in Ontario and that is the date that is used.

@Hurlabrick , I agree. I'm just confused how will they decide the Ontario landing date for my wife. Will the flight ticket be valid proof of this?

@canuck78 Yes.

Yes flight date will determine landing date if she is permanently settling in Ontario and will meet the OHIP residency requirements.

Who qualifies
To qualify for OHIP, you must meet all of the minimum qualifications listed below plus at least oneof the additional requirements.

To meet the minimum qualifications you must:

  • be physically in Ontario for 153 days in any 12‑month period
  • be physically in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after you began living in the province
  • make Ontario your primary home

You aren't being serious right ? You only came to Canada and you are already thinking about how to defraud the system ?
Besides every other check they do on people, they should really start doing a morals check

Thank you for your replies. Kindly be assured that I'm not foolish enough to try to hoodwink the system where I'm going to live for the forseeable future. That is why there was a "hypothetically" attached to my query. My main purpose of asking this question is to understand how they will decide the starting date for the waiting period as they mentioned to me that AirBnB booking confirmations or flight tickets are not sufficient proof of residence/arrival to Ontario.

Your question might have been hypothetical but the replies above are real. For needed proofs and definitions, just look at reply 2

Landing date or Airbnb receipt is enough to prove landing date. There are specific residency proof requirements. I would wait u TIL you have your permanent address before applying for OHIP. You have 3 months to apply and is a waste of time and money to change the address a month later if you are in the process of looking for a permanent home.
