When to get SIN number?

We got CoPR yesterday in the mail, yay!

We did Outland application but my husband is in Canada now on a visitor visa. We have an appointment next Tuesday for him to « land » officially.

My question is, can we go get his SIN number before the landing appointment? It says that we will only need the COPR to get the SIN number, which we have, so should be good right? Or do we need to wait until after landing?

But...i would call whichever Service centre you are going to go to to get his SIN regardless because i have had numerous dealings with (Service Ontario for me) where you read one thing and then you get there and its another. Miscommunication or misinformation - either way its never fun to waste your time in those places!

I see you’re in Ottawa, so are we! We’ll be going to the Service Canada at city hall, but I’ll call them tomorrow to get more info!

Yes i am, east end kind of!

They seem pretty good at the City Hall one, we were there a few weeks ago for my partners hunting tags that he had lost. I've had a few rough times at the one in the small town we live in so i might be giving them too much of a hard time but worth a phonecall regardless.

1. Actually no, Service Canada probably won't issue a permanent SIN as he has not been "landed". Wait until he is "landed" and then go get the SIN.

The COPR is fine to bring with you but it needs to be stamped, you can’t use a COPR that has not been used to land yet.

Let me know how it goes.. I can either get my SIN from Ottawa side or the french side But since I'll go to the border I've heard of people just getting it right at the border. There is one close to Ogdensburg.

How long did Ottawa take to issue your coPR ?
