When to apply for PR renewal

Hi,

I have a question regarding renewal.
I have done my PR landing with Family on Feb 20 2010. My family left back to my home country
on Mar 2 2010 and I stayed back for close to 6 weeks searching for a job and left Canada on April 2 2010.

We came back to Canada on April 2 2013 and have stayed in Canada since then without leaving.
When the PR expires in Feb 2015, I might meet the required days for meeting the obligation but my family could be
short of meeting the obligation by 4 or 5 weeks. In this scenario, I would like to know when I should apply for PR renewal for my family and myself? Does it make staying in Canada illegal after Feb 20 2015 since they have not met the obligation.

If your family is already in Canada, then they have nothing to worry about. They can stay in Canada until they meet RO. It doesn't matter if their PR card expires, as long as they in Canada they can wait until they have enough days and then apply. It is not "illegal". They are still PR, even if the card itself expired.

My wife is searching for a job. If she gets a job during the period after Feb 2015 and before she has a renewed PR card, will the
expired card be sufficient to prove residency?

Does she have a SIN number?

Yes. It starts with 5 since it is of a PR.

I think that is all she needs. Usually employers simply just need a SIN number. I don't think they will ask her for her PR card. Some people say it is becoming more common for employers to ask for a PR card but I'm not sure how widespread that is. I think she will be fine. If she had one that started with '9', then they would want some more documentation since the '9' is for temporary workers.
