Hi All -

My spouse is landing in March to gain the PR status - she is from Argentina. What is the process for obtaining a SIN number after that, and roughly how long?

We are applying for school programs and she will need it ASAP.

Cheers

Your wife needs to take her passport and her COPR paper that is stamped at the airport when she arrives to a Service Canada centre and they will give her a SIN number right awy and you should have the card within 2 weeks. :D

To add to what KJG mentioned, you need only the SIN number (not the actual SIN Card) for work purposes. Wherever you need it, just provide the number. If any employers ask for a copy of the card, you can mention that it would come in the mail and that you would provide it upon its arrival.

What school program requires a SIN? The SIN is not an ID and a limited amount of organizations are allowed to have it. You should never give it out to anyone who is not legally authorized to have it.

ya as said any "Service Canada Centre" will give her a SIN, Driver licence and health card, just look up the closest "Service Canada Centre" near you. SIN: she can get right away, if you want even the same day she lands, she gets a temporary paper with the number on it and the card comes in the mail. Driver license: you have to check if she can just exchange her old one from her country or if she has to take a test again. Health card: you need proof of residency, they give you a list of what counts as proof, driver license and PR card are 2 of them (but there is a 3 months periode before the coverage starts, so there's no need in trying to get the health card right away)
I attend school soon and the SIN isn't needed for it! Be careful as harju said, if people ask for your/her SIN.

They won't be giving you a "driver's license" at a Service Canada location. You have to go to the appropriate "provincial" office (MTO in Ontario) to get one of those.

Yep but they tell you where to go! And you can renew your driver license at a "Service Canada", basically "Service Canada" will provide you with the most ID's and licenses or at least with the info for it.
