When can I apply for visa

Hey,
I got the accepatance letter from NAIT for fall 2016 term. Can I apply for study permit now? someone told me that I can apply 3 months before the classes starts. that means i can apply in May. Is it like that?
also please let me know that which documents are needed. and what should be included in SOP to avoid visa rejection.

Considering processing can take anything from a few weeks to several months I'd apply a lot earlier than may. And what if you get your application denied and have to redo it. So, yeah, get that application in around february/march.
