When an LMO enables you to start working if the offered job doesn't start immed

Hi there,

I worked at a Summer Camp in Canada last year.

I did this through a UK Camp agency, who sorted me out an LMO.

I have booked an outward flight to Canada mid-January 2011. I plan to work in ski resorts then back at the same Summer Camp I already worked at.

However I'd prefer not to book a return flight as I don't know whether I want to stay in Canada even longer than the 10 months.

I can't apply for an otherwise ideal BUNAC work visa without a return flight booked.

Therefore, if my Summer Camp employer, who has offered me work starting in June, gets me an LMO, will it be valid for work in Canada as soon as I go through customs and get it 'made into paper' in January? Or will it only start (and I'll only be able to work) when the job offered starts (June).

I am eager to know this so I can know whether to book my return flight and go with Bunac route instead!

Thanks in advance for any help :)

No. An LMO is employer and position-specific. You will only be authorized to work for the employer & the job on the LMO. The time frame is specified later on the work permit; if the job doesn't start 'til June neither will the period of authorization.

For your plan, the BUNAC is a much better idea.

Also, to get an LMO for you the employer has to:

1) Advertise the job to a satisfactory degree;
2) Show that they cannot employ a canadian citizen or PR with the same qualifications and experience as you;
3) Are paying you a fair rate for the position.

For a summer camp employee I imagine point 2 would be the difficult one.

Amazing thank you so much for the help!

I'll get a BUNAC visa then.

Thanks again!
There is a good chance that OWP through Bunac won't exist in 2011, but you will be able to apply directly to CHC. See: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/united_kingdom-royaume_uni/work-travail/index.aspx
