Just a thought that popped up in my head, there are soooo many people on this forum who are struggling and praying and doing everything in between for CIC and VOs to speed up the process and get their loved ones in the same country. So, why didn't you guys try to find a suitable match in Canada for yourself to avoid this wretched process? I can begin by saying, my spouse is my cousin's best friend who I met at cousin's wedding and fell in love, got married and have a 2.5 year old baby. Can’t wait to be together 

Distance makes the hearts grow fonder!

What's your story?

I have to admit, your phrasing put me off. I love my wife fiercely and would go through just about anything to be with her. When you find the right person, that's all that matters, whether they live across the street or on the other side of the planet.

Our story - we were both involved in a youth organization in our home countries and were looking for penpals so the kids could learn about life in other countries. The organization introduced us, and now here we are.

My story - we met in 1997 (!) online - we were both in unhappy marriages. She's Canadian, I'm a U.S. citizen. I was able to get a divorce easily, but her husband wouldn't give her one. So she would visit me, but I couldn't visit her. Her husband turned a blind eye to our relationship, but for all those years he still wouldn't give her a divorce, and she didn't have the money to fight him on it. He always called me her "friend".

He passed away in early 2014 from cancer. It was brutal and she did what she could to make him comfortable from the day he was diagnosed. We finally were married in Sept 2014 and now that it's been a year since his passing, we are finally doing an outland PR for me - the paperwork will be filed shortly. It's been so long - but we stuck by each other and were going to no matter what...not even knowing whether we'd ever be together. Our reward will hopefully come this summer. I just got back to California from a visit for Valentine's Day - not even the cold the past few days or a busted hot water pipe on Monday at her house can deter us! :D

8 years is a really long time my friend! But that just goes to show the love can conquer anything - including CIC :)

I don't think we choose our partner for life. It is predestined.

When I came to Canada on an OWP I was engaged to my then-boyfriend from my home country. As a matter of fact we came to Canada together and started working at the same place. At the very same work place I met my current husband. He also worked there. We started as friends.. coffee breaks.. walks to the subway station together..skipping trains.. He insisted on breaking up with my then-boyfriend and moving in with him. In a beginning I refused. However after awhile I realized I was lovestruck. I still am! So I broke up with my ex-fiance and got together with my current hubby. Even though I knew him only for couple months.
In a year we got married and 5 months ago we had our precious baby-girl.

We just want to get the immigration process over with and live happily not worrying about any visas and stuff.

:D

I met my husband while i was on vacation in his country. We seemed to have an instant spark and i found myself constantly going and chatting with him and making excuses to go and hang out and talk with him (he worked at the hotel I was staying at). When i went home i felt really sad but even though we had exchanged contact information i didnt think it would go anywhere. Well, when he sent me a message when i got home i was ecstatic! We kept in contact and i went back to visit him a couple times. 1.5 years later when i had finished university and teachers' college, i moved there to see if things woild really take off. I accepted a job as a grade 5 teacher there. I planned to stau for one year but ended up staying for 3! Finally, 4.5 years after we had met and 3 years after moving, we got married in July 2012. I returned home and sponsored him. Thank goodness the process only took him 3 months to be approved for PR! That's our story. Not something i ever thought i would do, but it turned out to be a good idea! :)

05-02-2015 Finally
I met my husband on an online dating site. The funny thing is, we did it just for the heck of it, not really expecting it to amount to anything. My membership was almost up when I met him. We talked for 6wks before actually meeting then about 6 months later I started spending most of the time in Canada. It wasn't always easy and even being from the US there was a little adjustment process but it was worth it.

My husband and I met in july 2013.
We met randomly at a beach resort club in the philippines where we were both on vacation.
I was with my family and he was with his.
We were at the beach, they were playing volleyball in the water.
My cousins noticed them... they were cute! We secretly spoke about them in french.
My family and I are from Canada and him and his family are from belgium. (Canada and Belgium speak french.)
The ball accidentally hit my head. =S
I turned around and got mad...
He apologized..... in french. ^_^
We introduced ourselves... we spoke... <3 WE HAD A LOT IN COMMON (it was freaky)
2 hrs later, we had to leave... =(
We exchanged twitter accounts... =)
We continues keeping in contact.
He came to visit me in canada in november for my birthday.
Came back to see me in March.
We went to Mexico in May (HE PROPOSED!!! :D)
I went to Belgium in August 2014, we got MARRIED!
and now.... WERE PREGNANT!!!! :)

...... real life will begin, when the papers arrive! so papers.... hurry up please!!! =)

She didn't need her husband to agree to divorce her, and you can't hold someone hostage in a marriage here in Canada. All she needed was to be separated for 365 days and she could have filed for divorce whether he wanted one or not. He may have fought her on division of assets but the marriage act would have protected her and have granted her a divorce.

I read it a couple of times too before I understood!!
Great idea for a thread. I love hearing people's stories and what prompts us all to go through this process.

We met while travelling in Japan back in May 2012. I was there on a short term study permit through university, and he was backpacking for fun. We stayed in the same hostel, clicked immediately and spent a day exploring the city together before I had to return home. We kept in touch daily after that, and I bought a flight on a whim to go see him in his country (Austria) a couple of months later. We took a road trip together through Germany, Austria, Italy, France, and the Czech Republic for a month before I had to go back to work. We couldn't handle the goodbye at the airport, at this point we were very much in love, so he bought a last minute flight and followed me back to Canada! He stayed for a month before returning back to Austria to work. We've been doing the long distance thing, flying back and forth to visit each other every 3-4 months ever since! Eventually he proposed and we got married (obviously :) ).

Life would have been a lot easier if we'd said no to the distance, but my life is much richer with him in it.
