My husband holds a 3-year work permit with the expiry date of 7/1/2016 and my 7-year-old kid is on an open study permit with the same expiry date. As we all came from visa-exempt country, my 3-year-old kid and I entered Canada as visitors (7/15/2013) and filed for extension in late July, hoping to get permits with the same expiry date as my other family members.

I received email notification on 10/22, saying that our application was approved but we need to do our health exam. Before my health exam, I got the new paper document in mail from CIC, and the expiry date on it was 3/22/2014. So CIC basically extended my stay for only two months!!! (My original one when entering Canada was due on 1/15/2014.)

We did our health exam on 11/1 and haven't heard a thing from CIC. Are we suppose to get any new permit with longer duration? or the document we received earlier was the final decision? Do I need to keep filing for extension for the following years while my husband and kid are in Canada? Or should I just go back to my country and apply for an open work permit?

You need to file an extension, As you have had the medical, request the same date as the expiry of your spouse's work permit.

Thanks for your reply. I did request for the same expiry date last time when I filed for extension. But 2 months is all I got. So sad...

That was because you require a medical, and they won't give you a longer extension until you have had the medical and passed.
