what happens is you get screwed. Because CIC call center will not even check ur file if it hasn't been 6 months after ur test. If they send u ur oath letter 3 months after ur test and u don't receive it and no update, c'est fini ...who the hell knows :(

That's why I'm scared sh$@less of sending/receiving such important documents via regular mail.

They should really start sending these invites, by registered mail or a courier. If they want to keep sending them via regular mail then eCAS should be updated for everyone regularly so the applicant's know what's going on. Who are we to say though? its CIC and working that way is their style.

I remember reading that they sent some people email invites and they were going to their junk folder resulting in missing their test/oath appointments. That's the worst, but keep checking your email, mail box, and ecas regularly.

Thats why its a good idea to regularly get ATIP reports . Yes you may have already missed the oath/test, but atleast you know there was one and can call them to rectify issue.

Here is an example of how this can really be an obstacle.
I need to go through a process called "Évaluation Comparative des études", where the province of Québec would study all my diplomas and certify me in everything that would be equivalent in Québec-Canada.
We cannot set an appointment. I need to send ALL THE ORIGINALS and copies through mail to them. Then they will check the documents and SEND ME BACK.
I can easily send them through registered mail, no problem. But they will send it back through regular mail.
There is no way in hell I will trust regular Post Canada mail with all my original diplomas and education related documents. If I lose these documents, there is no recovering.

There is only so much you can worry. Your scenario above can happen but there is no way to plan work around it. CIC is not that cooperative. They hardly communicate or communicate hard (RQ). So we have to just believe things are going to be ok and relax.
If it helps check mail, email and ecas regularly. As someone mentioned order ATIP (though there are some school of thought that this delays your overall process- I dont think it will affect if you order the electronic notes on your file) and last least of all try calling CIC central number.

All the best! hope you have the best case scenario and get your Oath invite delivered by Canadapost in your hand.

OR CIC will send invites to your "home address" completely ignoring the fact that you have a "mailing address" on file. Of course, the home address might be a rural land description with no mail delivery, causing the mail to eventually get returned to CIC a month or so later as undeliverable and now you look suspicious. :-\
