Hello everyone
I just would like to know what places/ services require a credit check in Canada?

I called Tellus for internet service (the first time)
They asked to provide them a government issued licence number he said we need to verify that you are you before starting to use our services.
So I just gave them my health card number.

Please I also heared there is soft and hard credit check what does this mean?

Is there difference between credit check & credit card check?
This thing is little unclear to me.

Thanks everyone.

Most utilities, Telecom, bank/credit companies would do a credit check before offering their services to you.
Telecom does it for any postpaid plans. Credit check basically involves checking your credit history (whether you have paid all bills on time in the past, credit utilization etc )
You can also check it for free from websites such as borrowell or pay a fee with Equifax or TransUnion.

Thank you very much for the information I'm learning so much here!

What or which telecommunications company offers cell phone plan that helps building credit without purchasing a cellphone on a 2 year plan?
I mean paying monthly bills to one of these companies will be reported as positive to the 2 credit bureaus in order to increase the credit...

Bell
Telus
Rogers
Fido
Freedom

Thanks

Almost all of them allow it as long as you have a credit card and only getting the service and not a new phone on contract.
The other option is public mobile prepaid which wouldn't do any credit check.

Thank you!
So if I port my phone number into Rogers will this build up my credit too? Because I read somewhere else that they only report late or miss payments only but not building score.
Could you please confirm this to me?
Thank you very much

I have never used a credit card, and I will be moving to Canada in Sep. Will I be having my credit history, if yes from whre can I check that?

If you haven’t been living in Canada you won’t have a credit history. Once you move to Canada you will have to build up your credit history.

Thats helpful, thanks. But I have heard from people saying that landlords usually require credit history or job offer/payslips before they rent out their property. If people who dont have credit history or who usually dont have any job when they land, then how do they manage to get an accomodation on rent.
