What to do when crossing the border with my wife?

I am a Canadian citizen, and I just married a woman from the U.S.A.

She is coming to Canada with me while our application is being filed. When crossing the border in our car, what do we do?

Do we drive up to the window, and explain them the situation? Where do we go?

Thanks

Chances are - unless she's inadmissible for a criminal reason - she will be let into Canada with you. They have even give her a Visitor's Record, which are papers for visa exempt visitors. She would need it to open a bank account (and depending where you live, apply for healthcare).

It's best if you drive, so you can be the primary speaker. Let the agent know you wish to have your wife come to Canada with you. If you have begun the sponsorship process, bring proof. This can include your payment receipt. Many times, Americans are allowed into Canada with a year or two long VR to wait out the sponsorship process with their Canadian spouse.

However, don't use the word 'move' and don't bring a bunch of household items. It should be personal items - and the M word is like setting off an alarm.

I went through the same thing. Just explain to them that you would like your wife to visit with you while you wait for her residency application to go through. My husband was given 6 month visitors visa right away.

PS: Your wife will need the VR to open a bank account and do other things (depending on where you live).

My first VR was 6 months, I applied online for an extension and got 1 year. I asked for 14 months for my new one - doubt I'll get it, but hey, it can't hurt to ask!

We both have accounts through CIBC, one joint one and we each have our own, do we need all three statements?
