Hi,
1. It’s better to carry one sleeping bag and one adventure back-pack. I personally believe that it’s really important to have one good quality sleeping bag. I realize it's importance when I was in the Army. You can buy it from the Army Canteen (Non CSD) in Chandigarh.
2. Keep in mind the appliances/electronic equipment (of INDIA) is NOT compatible with Canadian electricity (110 volts), so you may need to carry one voltage converter. You may also need a plug adapter. You can these items from any electronic shop in Chandigarh.
3. It’s also better to keep a one/two month supply of general medications which you may require in case of normal trouble.
4. For your money, it’s better to have ‘Traveller’s Cheque (American Express). You can easily redeem TC anywhere in Canada. You can buy TC from any nearest ICICI/Thomos Cook branch, Chandigarh. You MUST ask for CAD in denominations of less than $50.
5. And also, bring coins ($1 loonies, $2 toonies), you will need coins for traveling by bus and also for many general purpose of daily usage.
6. Take all of your academic, work experience, and other achievements certificates. (if any). You may need it at the time of internship/or a possible co-op term
7. It’s better to bring at least one full business suit. (especially for business students)
8. It’s better to buy heavy winter clothes in Canada. You will find much better deal/offer mainly around Christmas. Of course they are of much better quality.
9. Take the print out of the map for travelling to your destination in Canada.
10. Plan your flight to reach at your destination before 5-6pm.
11. It’s also good if you come at least 1 week in advance (if it is possible for you).
12. You can also bring your driver’s license. It’s valid for International students. (only for a short duration)
13. And yes, you MUST keep one photocopy of all of your documents like PP, LOA etc and keep it separate from your originals.
14. And finally be prepared to face a “Cultural Shock”. Most of the students find it quite stressful to experience something too different. (Your excitement won’t stay forever with you). Most probably for the first time you are going to live away from your family, so you can’t underestimate the challenges which you are certainly going to face in Canada. You better think of an Immigrant life facing challenges in an unknown country. To conclude, life in Canada is not only about purchasing laptops and electronic gadgets.
Good luck
* I need more suggestions.
