What is the obligation of maintaining PR for a family

Hi All
I will appreciate all who will provide a correct reply to my situation whereby my family can keep their PR whereas I may not be able to prove the physical stay of 730 days in Canada.
I along with my spouse with 2 minor kids landed in Canada in April 2010 and we all obtained our PR cards valid until April 2015. After taking the PR cards and staying in Canada for 3 weeks we all came back to our country and did not go back to Canada. I am having a job in the gulf and do not want to leave the job whereas I want to keep my family (spouse and 2 kids) there so that children can stay and study there whereas I will work in the gulf and support them. As being away from Canada for more than 730 days I may not fulfill the minimum stay obligation whereas my family can fulfill the requirement as they will stay continuously from March 2013 while I will visit them periodically. My question is that whether I can do this keeping my family there and myself away in the gulf without my family having any trouble as I do not accompany them as I am principal applicant.
I will be much obliged if our learned members of this forum provide me the information which will be helpful for keeping atleast PR of my family.

Yes - your family can retain their PR status if they live in Canada 730 days out of every five rolling years. It doesn't matter if you, the principal applicant, don't accompany them and lose your PR status. They can still keep theirs provided they meet residency requirements. Now that all of you have landed, each person's PR status is independent.

Thank you very much for the reply now it is sure that the PR obligation is independent for every individual of a family and whosoever fulfills the minimum physical presence requirement in Canada in every 5 year period will retain his/her PR.

Right just to add that if you do not fulfill in first five year, an appliction for extension of your stay to be filed.

Correct. Once the record of landing is complete, all members of the PR application are permanent residents in their own right, and independently have their own tally of 2 years / 5 years to meet.

AFAIK, there is no possibility of extension. If you do not complete the required 730 days in the 5 year period, then you are not eligible to renew your residency and you will lose your status and must re-apply afresh.

You would need at least some kind of implied status in order to remain (an application in progress on another route or something).

Thank you all those who have responded. My question again is as follows

1- If I am sure that I can not make the 730 days Canadian residency requirement in 5 year period to extend the PR status for another 5 year term, whether still I can be able to travel back and forth to Canada until the expiry of the first 5-year term i. e until 20 Apr 2015 to visit my family who will be staying in Canada.
2- What is the requirement to get a visa after the PR status is expired, is there a need to start over again the PR process or can get long term visit visa to visit the family more often.
3- As stated by wonderful, whether the extension of the minimum stay (730 days) can be filed in the first 5-year term so that this obligation of 730 days may be extended to say 7 years instead of 5 years, please clarify.

No - the 5 year term cannot be extended. This is impossible.

the PR is extendable only once after 5 years ....this is wat they told us in IOM pre departure session.
