My daughter married an american and currently lives in the states. They are expecting their first child this winter and she plans on bringing the baby to visit a couple of months afterwards. Is this realistic and if so what documentation will she require and how long does it take to get the required documentation?

The infant will need a passport, though I think just the birth certificate is okay if traveling overland.

Not sure how long it takes to get a birth certificate...presumably that depends on the jurisdiction.

It takes about 4-6 weeks to get a US passport, but you can get it expedited, about 2 weeks.

Traveling within a few months of birth is probably feasible from a timing perspective. But personally, I don't think it's wise to travel with a two month old infant in winter from an exposure to disease perspective...less of a worry if they're driving up in their own car.

I'd like to add that if your daughter is Canadian by birth or by naturalization, she can apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate for her baby as well. This takes at least several months and she would probably be better off doing that through a Canadian embassy in the US.
